40′s Inspiration
The glamorous 40′s featured long slinky gowns, on the silver screen at least. Worn by stars such as Bette Davis, the flowing lines gradually gave way to the flared look of the early fifties. We have original designs for this type of dress and a sample dress in crepe satin is almost finished, CLICK HERE to see.
Like all fashion periods, the decades tend to merge together and what one normally thinks of as a 40′s dress may look like an earlier or later period. With wedding dresses in particular, often there is little reference to the evening wear style of the period and inspiration often taken from past periods, fashions being cyclical as we all know!
This one is fairly typical, and big sleeves did make a comeback, in addition to padded shoulders, supposedly started by Joan Crawford, who was told by a director that her shoulders were too wide. How this solved the problem escapes me……….
