Christening Dress – recycling for an heirloom update

Share

We promised some better photos of this beautiful little girl in her gown, so here’s an update:

Beautiful Baby!

We were recently asked to make a christening gown from the grandmother’s wedding dress, made from lace with a satin underlay. This is the result, managing to use most of the lace and trim from the original dress, with just a little more silk to complete. There is more fabric in these dresses than you might imagine and the original was relatively short, so we gave the dress two tears and also managed to use the original lace trim on neckline, sleeves and bodice.

Apart from the eco friendly recycling aspect, the family now has an heirloom that no doubt will be used for future christenings and that has family history sewn in!

We enjoyed the “tiny sewing” experience and are happy to offer the same service to future customers. CONTACT US if this concept appeals to you or should you want a brand new gown for your baby’s special day.

Fashion trends are also affected by TV programmes and films, Madmen in particular having a huge impact on 50′s retro scene and having its own fashion galleries. So what’s next on the trend horizon?

Your new dress – modern or vintage?

The trend for vintage  bridal wear and indeed vintage themed weddings is on the increase throughout the country. Most brides are still doing things “traditionally” but many are looking for something different and individual, some wanting to fit their theme into the character of the venues, which are now becoming more diverse, from actual Tudor mansions, castles and interiors in Art Deco form.

To see just how popular the trend is,

Colours are IN!

Some brides will always go for the traditional white or ivory, but more and more brides are asking for colour, for the whole look or added as an embellishment. Some even specify anything but white. Traditionalists might not be aware that the white or ivory dress only became fashionable in the 18th Century, following Victoria’s choice of gown.

Many viewers of these BBC programmes have seen the changes on the High Street of Shepton Mallet, from the Victorian era through to the present programme (at the time of writing) about the 60′s. Their TV blog gives more information and some discussion if you have missed it.
