We have been kept quite busy lately with a flood of wedding dress alterations, from the cheapest internet import to some of the most expensive designer dresses. One would expect that, at the cheaper end, the source of these garments is from China or some other far eastern or middle eastern country. These seem to need quite a bit of work,as I have described in previous posts and as expected are a bit “rough” on the insides.

So you would expect that a “designer” dress costing between a grand and three grand would be made somewhere else to justify the expense?

Main Advantage

Properly made to measure means that it will fit you perfectly……..obviously! Dresses made to your three basic measurements might not, but you can’t really call this a full made to measure service. What other advantages are there, I hear you ask?

Quality and Finishing

Many mass produced dresses found in the high street or online, are not finished to the same high standards as a properly made couture dress.

The most common way of buying a wedding dress is from a shop, you see one, you love it so you try it on. It might fit, it might not, but it can be altered says the assistant, usually at your expense.

Internet sales are on the increase but unless you have seen examples of the maker’s work and are confident that your dress is going to fit, this could be a risky business. The cheapest dresses can be found on the net, which is also the most useful tool for checking out your alternatives.

More and more brides are looking for something exclusive, made from the fabrics of their choice with higher standards of workmanship that can rarely be found on dresses sold in the high street. So what are the pro’s and cons of each?

New Dress Design

We have been busy beavering away on our new design, which is a response to what some of our brides have been requesting. We always like to show works in progress as a taster of things to come, so here’s a photo of the dress to give you an idea.

Our latest silk bodice with boned inner foundation - nothing else needed!

Not all of us are size 8 or a perfect shape. For those who are not media model shaped or standard sizes, the made to measure route and choice of style is still the best way to compliment your figure on your special day. Boned bodices and built in foundations should give you the shape you desire,

About to crease with a little more tension

We have been brought yet another “designer” wedding dress with problems that need to be solved. After tackling several similar jobs, we know what to expect and how to fix a dress that feels unsubstantial, rolls over in various places on the bodice and does not offer enough control to keep a smooth line in the bodice.

The last show at Harrogate was a great success, with a wide range of exhibitors showing everything to make your vintage themed wedding a success. Be sure to visit us at the new show, where you will see some of our new 50′s sample dresses. Further details can be found on the link below.

Cover Up!

The 50′s short dress still seems to be the most popular style and we will be introducing something a little different. Sleeves and coverage above the bustline are both definitely making a comeback, both solid and semi transparent. Matching hem extensions and sashes can compliment these features and are also proving popular. Come and see our stand, look closely at our work, or just have a chat with us if you would like some advice. We won’t bite or do a sales job on you, so see you there!

Show Info

The show runs from 12 noon-5pm at the St George Hotel, 1 Ripon Road,Harrogate, HG3 2SY.

The use of rear lacing in “Corset Styled” wedding dresses has been re- born in recent years. In addition to the fashion statement, there is an added bonus for “ready to wear” or “altered to fit” sellers, not to mention those brides whose weight “fluctuates” as many brides diet before the wedding and some put on weight.

Another benefit of lacing, is that old dresses can be converted to fit the new bride, within reason of course. So, is this the answer for all the above problems?
